Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten at Frontier Academy!

Whether you are already enrolled for the upcoming school year or are just investigating your local kindergarten options, we are excited to collaborate with you and your child on this education journey.

Kindergarten is a unique time in your family’s life. The first year of schooling is important and lays the foundation for your child’s lifelong learning, and sometimes the process of choosing the right place for your child to build this foundation can be challenging and overwhelming!

This page provides answers to some of the questions you may have, as well as general information about our school and Kindergarten program. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions you may have.

Is my child ready for Kindergarten?

Kindergarten readiness is unique to each child and must be considered on an individual basis. Frontier Academy requires that Kindergarten students be (5) years of age on or before June 15 of the year he/she starts school.

Of course, age is not the sole indicator of a student’s preparedness for Kindergarten. Over the years, we have had many parents and preschool teachers ask us for a list of all skills that are typically required for Kindergarten. While no definitive list exists, you can read more about Frontier Academy’s recommended skills here.

How do I enroll my child in Kindergarten at Frontier Academy?

Frontier Academy is a charter school, and as such, it is a public school open to all families in our community. However, because we strive to keep our student-to-teacher ratio low, we do not always have enough seats to match the volume of interest in our school.

Students wishing to enroll in Kindergarten at Frontier Academy may fill out a Letter of Intent form and will be added to the wait list. All openings are filled based on the date a Letter of Intent is received.

Kindergarten Round-Up:

In April, we host our annual Kindergarten Round- Up. Parents will be invited to the Round-Up once your student is enrolled.

This event offers families the opportunity to fill out paperwork, ask questions, get more detailed information, and meet Frontier teachers and staff. We lay out more information about our kindergarten curriculum and program, and you can tour our buildings and and get answers to any questions that you may have about your child’s first year at Frontier Academy.

At Kindergarten Round-Up, you will also learn about the kindergarten assessment. This assessment is given every May and simply allows us to see how to best support every incoming kindergartner on an individual level. We provide a copy of the exact assessment we will give your child in our Kindergarten Round-Up Folder.

What will my child learn in Kindergarten?

Reading and Writing:
We use a phonics-based reading program called Reading Mastery (Classic Edition). This program allows us to place students into reading groups based on their ability and skill level. Both students who are already readers and those who are working on mastery of letters and sounds will be supported and continue to progress at their own pace and level.

Students write on a daily basis. We begin with copying simple words and sentences and then students slowly transition into writing words and sentences independently.

Mathematics:
We use the Saxon Math curriculum in kindergarten. Students learn about patterns, money, three dimensional shapes, basic shapes, telling time, number sense, counting objects, counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, identifying numbers, sequencing numbers, writing numbers, basic addition, basic subtraction, measurement, and graphing.

Core Knowledge (Social Studies/Science/Literature):
Our Core Knowledge curriculum is filled with many rich and diverse topics. In kindergarten students will learn about the Oceans, the US presidents on Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, the US flag, Plants and Farming, Magnets, Recycling, the Human Body, the Continents and much more.

We love that the Core Knowledge curriculum builds and spirals throughout the grade levels. Your kindergartner will go on in future grades to learn about the American Revolutionary War, Immigration, World Geography, Ancient Egypt, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Vikings, Early American Explorers, the Middle Ages, Westward Expansion, Colorado History, Economics, Ancient Greece, Body Systems, Cellular structure, Electricity, Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, Meteorology and much more!

Some of these topics of study are introduced in lower grade levels to establish foundational concepts so that  the higher grade levels can go into more depth on the same topics. Visit our Core Knowledge page for more information.

Homework:
Students do receive a small amount of homework. We believe that homework is important because it creates opportunities for educational interaction with families at home. Homework can also help students realize that learning happens both inside and outside of the classroom while helping students gain responsibility and good study habits.

Three homework pages come home every Thursday. They are due the following Thursday. Families can choose to complete them over the weekend or have their child complete them through the week.  We also encourage families to find time in the evening to read with your child. Reading is such a powerful way to expose your child to new vocabulary, new places and new concepts.
